Jeta's grove
A monastery donated to the Buddha by the merchant Anathapindika, on land purchased from Prince Jeta, near Savatthi.
Jetavana is the single most common setting for the opening 'frame story' of the Jataka tales, where the Buddha is prompted to recall one of his former births.
A forest ascetic paralyzed by the terrifying sounds of nocturnal beasts is counselled by the Bodhisatta that fear originates within one's own unsettled mind, and that meditative concentration dissolves all phantom terrors.
Anathapindika bought Prince Jeta's grove by covering it entirely in gold coins, building the Jetavana Monastery where the Buddha spent nineteen rainy seasons.
