Background
Sanskrit Documents prints this litany as 'Lakshmi Ashtottarashata Namavali 1' without naming a source scripture, and 103 of the 108 names here agree with it. The names, numbered 1 to 108, praise Lakshmi, consort of Vishnu, who rose from the churning of the ocean seated on a lotus, as the Puranas tell (names no. 45 and no. 94). In devotion she stands for the eightfold wealth of Ashta-Lakshmi, not coins alone, and her names are chanted with lotus flowers and kumkum on Fridays, at Varalakshmi Vratam and at Diwali.
Did You Know?
Emergence from the Ocean of Milk
Name no. 94 (Samudratanaya) and name no. 45 (Padmodbhava) recall Mahalakshmi's appearance during the Samudra Manthana, choosing Lord Vishnu alone as her eternal consort amidst celestial fanfare.
The Concept of Ashta-Lakshmi
Name no. 85 (Dhanadhanyakari, 'maker of wealth and grain') points to the eightfold wealth of Ashta-Lakshmi: Adi (primal), Dhana (wealth), Dhanya (grain), Gaja (royal power), Santana (offspring), Dhairya (courage), Vijaya (victory) and Vidya (knowledge).
Residing upon Hari's Chest
Name no. 99 (Narayanasamashrita, 'who takes refuge in Narayana') recalls Lakshmi's abode on Vishnu's chest, showing the inseparable union of the Divine Energy (Shakti) and the Lord who holds it.
The Sacred Bilva Abode
Name 78 (Bilvanilaya) highlights Lakshmi's residence in the Bilva tree, linking the worship of Shiva and Lakshmi through sacred ecological botanicals.
Destroyer of Inner Poverty
Name 72 (Daridryanashini) reminds devotees that true poverty is not the absence of coins, but the lack of gratitude, contentment, and divine awareness.
