Background

Sant Gora Kumbhar (affectionately called Goraba, c. 1267–1317) of Ter, Maharashtra, was a revered senior contemporary of Sant Dnyaneshwar and Sant Namdev. In traditional Warkari lore, Goraba was once tasked by the gathering of saints to test their spiritual ripeness using his potter's paddle (Thapatne)—tapping their heads to determine who was 'baked firm' and who was still 'unbaked clay' (leading Sant Namdev to seek Guru Visoba Khechar). This abhanga celebrates the complete union of physical vocation with supreme non-dual devotion. In the Tukaram Tatya edition of the Namdev Gatha it is no. 2234, signed by Gora Kumbhar and addressed to Namdev.

Did You Know?

The Potter's Paddle Examination

In Warkari tradition, Goraba famously used his clay-testing paddle to test the spiritual ripeness of all the Maharashtra saints assembled at Alandi.

Nirguna in Saguna

The abhanga dissolves the theological divide between the Formless Absolute and the personal God, declaring that Vitthal on the brick is none other than the transcendent Brahman.

Sanctity of Humble Labor

Along with Sant Savata Mali and Sant Sena Nhavi, Goraba established the golden Warkari principle that manual labor (Kayak / Seva) is the direct altar of God.
