Background
Sanskrit Documents lists this litany as 'Ganesha Ashtottarashatanamavali (3)' and names no scripture as its source, so it is best described as a traditional liturgical list used in Ganapatya and household worship rather than a text of one particular Purana. The 108 names run from no. 1, Gajanana, to no. 108, and every name begins with Om and ends with namah. Devotees offer them with flowers or durva grass at the start of rituals, journeys and study, asking Ganesha to remove obstacles.
Did You Know?
The Primacy of Prathama-Pujya
In Vedic cosmogony, Lord Ganesha was granted the boon of receiving the very first invocation in all rituals (Agrapujya), signifying that awareness and humility must precede action.
Significance of the Broken Tusk
Name no. 91 (Shubhradanta, 'of the bright tusk') and classical iconography recall Ganesha breaking his own tusk to write the Mahabharata as the sage Vyasa dictated, a popular tradition of supreme intellectual sacrifice.
The Modaka
Name no. 48 (Modakapriya) calls Ganesha fond of the modaka, the sweet dumpling offered to him in worship; devotees read it as a sign of the sweetness of fulfilment held within effort.
Cosmic Abode in the Muladhara
In Kundalini yoga, Ganesha resides at the root chakra (Muladhara), anchoring the earth element and regulating the dormant spiritual energy before it ascends the Sushumna.
The Sacred Durva Grass Offering
Tradition prescribes offering Ganesha 21 blades of durva grass, a cooling offering that devotees take as a sign of humility and purity.
