Background
Sanskrit Documents files this 108-name litany as the Durga Ashtottara Shatanamavali drawn from the Vishvasara Tantra, beginning 'Om Satyai Namah, Om Sadhvyai Namah' (names no. 1-108). It is central to Navaratri worship and Durga Puja. Tradition holds that reciting these names with red flowers or bilva leaves removes the severest distress and brings freedom from fear.
Did You Know?
The Meaning of 'Aparna'
During Her arduous penance to win Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati renounced food, water, and eventually even dried leaves (parna), earning the celebrated name 'Aparna'.
The Seven Matrikas
A run of seven consecutive names, Brahmi, Maheshwari, Aindri, Kaumari, Vaishnavi, Chamunda and Varahi, enumerates the Matrikas, the energies of the major deities united in the Divine Mother.
The Five Letters of 'Durga'
A traditional explanation reads 'D' as destroying demons, 'U' as removing obstacles, 'R' as dispelling disease, 'G' as removing sins, and 'A' as removing fear, so that the name itself protects on every side.
Shivaduti, Shiva as Her Messenger
The name Shivaduti recalls the Devi Mahatmya episode in which Durga sent Lord Shiva Himself as Her envoy to the demons Shumbha and Nishumbha, showing Her sovereign authority over all cosmic realms.
Echoes of the Devi Mahatmya
Names such as Mahishasuramardini (slayer of Mahishasura), Madhukaitabha-hantri (slayer of Madhu and Kaitabha), Chandamunda-vinashini and Nishumbha-shumbha-hanani recall the battles told in the Devi Mahatmya, so the litany works as a compact retelling of Her victories.
