Background
Context of Revelation: The Lalita Sahasranama is set in the Hayagriva-Agastya dialogue of the Brahmanda Purana (Uttara Khanda), and its closing colophon calls it the Shri Lalita Sahasranama Stotra Kathanam. Lord Hayagriva, the horse-necked wisdom form of Vishnu, teaches it to Sage Agastya at Kanchi. He explains that Lalita herself commanded the eight Vagdevatas (Vasini, Kameshvari, Modini, Vimala, Aruna, Jayini, Sarveshvari and Kaulini) to compose a hymn of her thousand names. The stotra proper runs through verses 1-182 here, and the names are numbered 1 to 1000. Commentators read it on several levels, including Kundalini yoga (Muladhara to Sahasrara), non-dual Vedanta and Sri Yantra worship. A note of caution from the Sanskrit Documents edition: the sahasranama is not readily found in the printed Brahmanda Purana volume it consulted, and may belong to later appendices (khila) of the Purana.
Did You Know?
The Eight Divine Speech Deities
Unlike ordinary hymns composed by mortal poets, the Lalita Sahasranama was composed by the eight Vagdevatas (Vasini, Kameshvari, Modini, Vimala, Aruna, Jayini, Sarveshvari, and Kaulini) commanded directly by Lalita Devi herself.
No Repetition in 1,000 Names
Tradition holds that none of the 1,000 sacred names repeats. Each name reveals a distinct aspect of Her cosmic manifestation, philosophical truth, or subtle Yogic energy.
Complete Kundalini Journey
The hymn systematically charts the ascent of Kundalini Shakti through the six bodily chakras, starting from Muladhara-chakarudha (dwelling in the root chakra) up to Sahasrarambujarudha (blossoming in the thousand-petaled crown lotus).
Bhaskararaya's Sovereign Commentary
In the 18th century, the great scholar-initiate Bhaskararaya Makhin wrote the definitive commentary Saubhagyabhaskara, revealing unprecedented grammatical, esoteric, and Vedantic depths of every single verse.
Unity of Shiva and Shakti
The final culminations of the hymn celebrate Shiva-shaktyaikya-rupini (Name 999)—the indivisible, non-dual oneness of pure unchanging consciousness (Shiva) and primordial cosmic power (Shakti).
