Background
This litany of 108 names of Vishnu is recited during Ekadashi observances, Thursday Vishnu pujas and morning prayers with tulasi leaves. The names follow, in order, the list that Sanskrit Documents files as '108 Names of Vishnu 2', credited to Vyasa by tradition; it is a traditional namavali of the Vaishnava stotra literature rather than a single scripture. The names are numbered 1 to 108 and show Narayana as the indwelling sustainer of life.
Did You Know?
The Cosmic Etymology of 'Vishnu'
Derived from the root 'viṣ' (to pervade), the name Vishnu signifies the omnipresent reality that penetrates every subatomic particle and galactic expanse in the multiverse.
The Sacred Kaustubha Jewel (Name 69)
During the churning of the ocean (Samudra Manthan), the radiant Kaustubha gem emerged and was placed upon Vishnu's chest alongside the Shrivatsa mark, symbolizing the pure, unblemished consciousness of all liberated souls.
The Mystery of 'Damodara' (Name 102)
Damodara ('rope around the belly') recalls Mother Yashoda binding baby Krishna to a wooden mortar; it signifies that the Infinite Supreme Being can never be captured by pride or power, but yields willingly to pure motherly love.
Yajnarupa, the Sacrifice Itself (Name 23)
In Vedic metaphysics, Vishnu is identified as the Cosmic Sacrifice Himself ('yajño vai viṣṇuḥ'). Every selfless act dedicated to the welfare of others is an offering directly received by Him.
Prahlada Paripalaka (Name 107)
Honoring Vishnu's descent as Narasimha, this name celebrates his protection of the devotee Prahlada; the Bhagavad Gita (9.31) gives the same assurance in the words that his devotee never perishes.
