Panch Chor
(पंच चोर)Literal Meaning
The five thieves
Etymology & Sanskrit Root
'Panch' (five) plus 'chor' (thief); the Sant-tradition metaphor Kabir uses for kama (lust), krodha (anger), lobha (greed), moh (attachment), and ahankar (ego) — the five inner vices that rob the soul of its wealth of virtue.
Spiritual Insight & Context
Kabir taught that these thieves are most dangerous precisely because they operate from within the house — no lock or pilgrimage can guard against an enemy already inside.
