Background

In the Muktika Upanishad, Lord Rama instructs Hanuman: 'For the liberation of the seeker, the Mandukya alone is sufficient' (Mandukyam ekameva alam mumukshunam vimuktaye). Gaudapada chose this concise text to compose his monumental Mandukya Karika, establishing systematic Advaita philosophy. Locator: Atharvaveda tradition, number 6 among the 108 Upanishads of the Muktika canon; a single short text of twelve mantras (chapter 1, mantras 1-12), preceded here by the peace invocation. Mantra numbers below (mantra 7 on Turiya, mantra 12 on the silent amatra OM) follow the traditional count. Gaudapada's Karika, in four chapters, is a separate work and is not part of these verses.

Did You Know?

'Mandukyam Ekameva Alam'

In the Muktika Upanishad, Lord Rama explicitly proclaims: 'Mandukyam ekameva alam mumukshunam vimuktaye'—confirming that for sincere seekers desiring liberation, deep assimilation of this 12-verse text alone is sufficient.

The Architectural Formula of OM (A-U-M)

The three audible phonemes of OM correspond directly to the three macrocosmic and microcosmic planes: 'A' governs the waking physical state (Vaishvanara), 'U' governs the subtle dream realm (Taijasa), and 'M' governs the unmanifest causal slumber (Prajna).

The Silent Fourth — Amatra (Mantra 12)

The true core of OM is the silence that follows the chant (Amatra)—the unvoiced background awareness upon which all sounds and thoughts appear and disappear, symbolizing Turiya.

The Supreme Negative Theology of Turiya (Mantra 7)

Mantra 7 is celebrated as the pinnacle of 'Neti, Neti' (not this, not that) non-dual methodology in world philosophy, defining pure consciousness solely by transcending all subjective and objective polarities.

Gaudapada's Doctrine of Non-Origination (Ajativada)

The philosophical commentary on this Upanishad, the Mandukya Karika by Gaudapada (the guru of Shankara's guru), introduced the profound doctrine that the Absolute Brahman never underwent any genuine transformation or creation—the universe is non-dual consciousness itself.
