Nava Tirupathi
Nine Navagraha Divya Desam Temples of Vishnu
Nine Divya Desam temples on the Tamirabarani river, each a form of Vishnu presiding over one of the Navagrahas, the nine cosmic planets.
Quick Devotional Guide
- •WHAT IT IS: A sacred circuit of nine glorious Vaishnava Divya Desam temples situated along the holy Tamirabarani river basin in Southern Tamil Nadu. In this unique sacred geography, Lord Maha Vishnu manifests as the supreme presiding deity of each of the nine cosmic planets, the Navagrahas, granting planetary relief directly through divine surrender known as Prapatti.
- •WHY VISIT / CHANT: Undertaking this parikrama absolves severe Navagraha-related astrological afflictions, dissolves ancestral karmic burdens, harmonizes subtle cosmic energies, and bestows the spiritual liberation called Moksha under the auspicious gaze of Sri Mahavishnu.
- •WHEN TO VISIT: October to March offers cool, pleasant weather. The most auspicious festival is Vaikasi Visakam, falling in May or June, when the Utsava deities of all nine temples assemble on their respective Garuda Vahanas to honor Saint Nammalvar at Alwarthirunagari.
- •WHERE: Thoothukudi and Tirunelveli districts in Tamil Nadu, India, nestled along the fertile banks of the perennial Tamirabarani River. The nearest transit hubs are Tirunelveli Junction railway station and the Tuticorin and Madurai airports.
- •HOW (VIDHI & RULES):
- •Parikrama Order: Traditionally commenced from Srivaikuntam, the Surya Kshetra, and concluded at Alwarthirunagari, the Guru Kshetra.
- •Dress Code: Strictly traditional Hindu temple attire, with dhoti or veshti worn by men, the upper torso bare or covered only by an angavastram, and sarees, pavadai, or modest salwar kameez worn by women.
- •Sacred Dip: A holy bath, called Snana, in the sacred Tamirabarani river before beginning the parikrama.
- •Offerings: Tulasi garlands, ghee lamps, and recitation of Sri Vishnu Sahasranamam and Nammalvar's Tiruvaimozhi pasurams at each shrine.
Sacred Origin & Puranic / Scriptural Lineage
The sacred tradition of Nava Tirupathi is deeply rooted in the Puranas and the golden epoch of Sri Vaishnavism. When the Navagrahas, the nine planetary deities, were afflicted with severe karmic imbalances and curses arising from their cosmic duties, they performed intense tapasya on the sanctified banks of the river Tamirabarani. Devotional tradition celebrates this river as the Ganga of the South, said to have sprung from the water pot of Sage Agastya. Pleased by the Navagrahas' devotion, Lord Maha Vishnu appeared before each planetary ruler in a distinct cosmic posture, standing as Nindra, seated as Irundha, or reclining as Kidantha, and declared that He Himself would embody their cosmic planetary vibrations to bless humanity.
Unlike traditional Navagraha temples where planetary deities are venerated individually, in Nava Tirupathi the supreme Lord Narayana is worshiped as the cosmic sovereign who controls and harmonizes the celestial spheres. A Vaishnava devotee worshipping Lord Vaikuntanathan at Srivaikuntam therefore pacifies the Sun, known as Surya in this context, directly through that single act of devotion. Bowing before Sri Adinatha at Alwarthirunagari likewise invokes the benevolent grace of Jupiter, called Guru in Sanskrit astrology. The complete pilgrimage offers total shielding from planetary adversities without diverging from unalloyed devotion to Sriman Narayana.
This sacred cluster holds unmatched scriptural authority in the Nalayira Divya Prabandham, having been glorified through ecstatic, sublime Tamil verses (Pasurams) by Saint Nammalvar, the crown jewel among the twelve Alwar saints. It is believed that Nammalvar, who remained seated in deep samadhi inside the hollow of a sacred tamarind tree (Tiruppuli Azhwar) at Alwarthirunagari for sixteen years, envisioned the transcendental forms of all nine deities at this single holy locus.

Saints, Mystics & Historical Lineage
The spiritual effulgence of Nava Tirupathi is inextricably bound to the lineage of the Sri Vaishnava Sampradaya. Saint Nammalvar, regarded as the very embodiment of the feet of the Lord (Satakopa), composed the monumental Tiruvaimozhi in this consecrated valley. Centuries later, Acharya Nathamuni sat in meditation at Alwarthirunagari, where through intense yogic vision of Nammalvar, he recovered the lost 4,000 verses of the Nalayira Divya Prabandham, thus reviving the scriptural core of Tamil Vaishnavism.
Great preceptors such as Swami Ramanujacharya, Manavala Mamunigal, and Pillai Lokacharya performed parikrama of these nine temples, composing commentaries and establishing strict temple agamic protocols based on the Vaikhanasa and Pancharatra scriptures. Historical inscriptions on the temple granite walls testify to the deep reverence and extensive architectural patronage extended by the Pandya, Chola, and Vijayanagara emperors, who endowed fertile paddy lands, mandapams, and towering gopurams to protect these sacred sanctuaries.
Sacred Hymn & Contemplation
Pilgrims and seekers meditating upon the cosmic sovereignty of Lord Narayana over the nine planetary spheres recite this sacred invocation:
नमोऽस्तु ते विष्णवे सर्वलोकाधिपाय च।
नवग्रहस्वरूपाय सर्वदोषहराय च॥
अनाथबन्धवे तुभ्यं श्रीनिवास नमो नमः।
Namō'stu tē viṣṇavē sarvalōkādhipāya ca।
Navagrahasvarūpāya sarvadōṣaharāya ca॥
Anāthabandhavē tubhyaṁ śrīnivāsa namō namaḥ॥
Translation: "Salutations unto Thee, O Supreme Lord Vishnu, Sovereign Ruler of all realms of existence! Reverence unto Thee who manifestest as the Nine Cosmic Planets (Navagrahas) and dissolvest all planetary afflictions and sins. O eternal protector of the helpless, O abode of Sri Lakshmi, we offer our prostrations unto Thee again and again."
Did You Know?
The sacred tamarind tree (Tiruppuli Azhwar) in the sanctum complex of Alwarthirunagari is over thousands of years old; remarkably, its leaves never close at night, earning it the divine name Uranga Puli (the sleepless tamarind).
During the annual Vaikasi Visakam festival, the processional deities (Utsava Murthis) of all nine Nava Tirupathi temples travel on their Garuda Vahanas to Alwarthirunagari in a majestic nocturnal congregation to honor Saint Nammalvar.
At Srivaikuntam temple, the sanctum sanctorum is engineered with such astronomical precision that the rays of the rising Sun fall directly upon Lord Vaikuntanathan's lotus feet twice every year during the Tamil months of Chithirai and Aippasi.
At Thirukkolur, Lord Vaithamanidhi Perumal reclines with his right hand placed upon a wooden measure (Marakkal) as a pillow, signifying His guardianship over the nine cosmic treasures (Nava Nidhis) returned by Him to Kubera.
Unlike conventional Navagraha shrines across Tamil Nadu where separate planetary altars are worshiped with specific grain varieties, here planetary peace is attained solely through Narayana Prapatti (absolute surrender to Maha Vishnu).
