The Sapta Puri

The Seven Holy Moksha-Bestowing Cities of Bharat

The Sapta Puri are the seven Puranic cities, from Ayodhya to Dwarka, said to grant moksha to sincere seekers who bathe, dwell, and worship there.

The Timeless Heritage of the Seven Moksha Cities

Sanatana Dharma reveres seven ancient cities as the Sapta Puri, sacred centers where avataras descended, great sages performed tapasya, and the grace of the divine is said to dissolve karmic bonds.

The Garuda Purana (Chapter 16, verse 114) names these seven cities and declares that bathing, meditating, and living with devotion in them purifies the seeker and leads toward liberation from the cycle of rebirth.

The Seven Cities in Brief

Ayodhya, on the banks of the Sarayu, is revered in the Valmiki Ramayana as the capital of King Dasharatha and the birthplace of Lord Rama. Its name means "the unconquerable," and pilgrims bathe at its riverside ghats and visit the Rama Janmabhoomi before circumambulating the city associated with the ideal reign, Rama Rajya.

Mathura, on the Yamuna, is celebrated across the Bhagavata Purana as the birthplace of Lord Krishna, born in the prison of King Kansa before being carried across the river to Gokul. Its temples and the nearby Vrindavan forest preserve the memory of Krishna's childhood leela, and pilgrims walk the Braj region associated with his youth.

Haridwar, where the Ganga first descends from the Himalayas onto the plains, is known as Gangadwara, the Gate of the Ganga. Har Ki Pauri, its most sacred ghat, is traditionally associated with a footprint of Lord Vishnu, and the city is one of the four sites of the Kumbh Mela, held here on the banks of the river.

Kashi, also called Varanasi, sits on the Ganga and is considered the abode of Lord Shiva himself. The Kashi Vishwanath temple enshrines one of the twelve Jyotirlingas (self-manifested shrines of Lord Shiva as a pillar of light), and tradition holds that Shiva whispers the Taraka Mantra into the ear of every soul who dies within the city, granting liberation regardless of their past karma.

Kanchipuram, on the Vegavathi river in Tamil Nadu, is known as the City of a Thousand Temples and is one of the rare tirthas sacred to all three major streams of devotion: the Shaiva Ekambareswarar temple, the Shakta Kamakshi Amman temple, and the Vaishnava Varadaraja Perumal temple stand within the same city.

Ujjain, called Avantika in the Puranas, sits on the Shipra river and houses the Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga, the only one of the twelve facing south. Ancient Indian astronomers treated Ujjain as a reference meridian for calculating time, and the city hosts the Kumbh Mela on the Shipra every twelve years.

Dwarka, on the Gujarat coast where the Gomti river meets the Arabian Sea, was the capital Lord Krishna built after leaving Mathura. The Dwarkadhish temple honors him as king of this city, and marine archaeological surveys off the coast have located submerged structures that researchers associate with the ancient settlement.

The Transformative Pilgrimage

Pilgrimage to the Sapta Puri cultivates a harmonious spiritual wisdom that bridges regions and traditions:

  • •
It bridges Northern and Southern spiritual traditions into a single pilgrimage geography, since six of the seven cities lie in North and Central India while Kanchipuram represents the South.
  • •
It combines the devotion of Vishnu, at Ayodhya, Mathura, and Dwarka, Shiva, at Kashi and Ujjain, Shakti, at Kanchipuram, and the sacred rivers themselves, at Haridwar.
  • •
It encourages ethical living, selfless charity, and meditation along the sacred river ghats that each of these cities shares.

Sacred Puranic Verse: The Seven Cities

The traditional Sanskrit verse, drawn from the Garuda Purana and recited daily across Bharat:

Ayodhya Mathura Maya

Kashi Kanchi Hyavantika।

Puri Dvaravati Chaiva

Saptaita Mokshadayikah॥

Translation: Ayodhya, Mathura, Maya (Haridwar), Kashi (Varanasi), Kanchi (Kanchipuram), and Avantika (Ujjain), as well as Puri Dvaravati (Dwarka) — these seven bestow liberation.

Northern & Southern Harmony

Six of the Sapta Puri are located in North and Central India, while Kanchipuram represents the sacred jewel of South India.

The Prime Meridian of Ancient Astronomy

Ujjain (Avantika) was the historical prime meridian and zero longitude for ancient Indian astronomers and astrologers.

Submerged Kingdom of Dwarka

Marine archaeological excavations off the coast of modern Dwarka have uncovered submerged stone structures dating back thousands of years.

Kumbh Mela Connections

Two of the Sapta Puri—Haridwar and Ujjain—host the sacred Kumbh Mela gatherings where millions gather for holy dips.
