Background

Sanskrit Documents files this litany as 'Annapurna Ashtottarashata Namavali', noting the Brahmottara Khanda and the Shiva Rahasya as its source and 'slight variations' from the corresponding stotras; 98 of the 110 lines here agree with it word for word. Annapurna, a form of Parvati and consort of Shiva, is invoked as the giver of food and nourishment. The names run from no. 1, Annapurna, to no. 108, and the text begins with a salutation to Ganesha and ends with a colophon, which is why it counts 110 lines. It is used in household and temple worship for abundance and the removal of hunger.

Did You Know?

Structure

A litany of 108 names, each prefixed with Om and ending in namah. The line list on this page also holds a salutation to Ganesha at the start and a closing colophon, so it runs to 110 entries.

Numbering

The source prints a number after every tenth name (10, 20 and so on up to 100), which is why some entries here carry numerals; the names themselves are numbered 1 to 108.

Mother of the Gods

Names such as Vishnujanani (no. 23), Brahmadijanani (no. 24), Ganeshajanani (no. 25) and Kumarajanani (no. 27) present her as mother of Vishnu, Brahma and the other gods, and of Ganesha and Kumara (Skanda).

Many Forms of the Goddess

She is addressed as Sarasvati, Lakshmi, Shri, Durga, Parvati, Bhavani and Tripura, so the litany gathers the great goddesses into one Mother who feeds all.

Echoes of Puranic Stories

Dakshadhvaravinashini (no. 103) alludes to the destruction of Daksha's sacrifice, and Chandamathani (no. 76) to the slaying of the demon Chanda, stories told of the Goddess in the Puranas and the Devi Mahatmya (chapter 7).
