Background
The Rama Ashtottara Shatanamavali is a litany of 108 names of Rama, the seventh avatar of Vishnu and the hero of the Ramayana. Each name begins with Om and ends with namah, so that a devotee can bow to Rama name by name, or repeat each name on a mala. The names gather the story of the Ramayana into a prayer. They recall his love for Janaki, his fight with Khara and Dushana, his crossing of the sea by a bridge, and the victory over Ravana. They also praise his truthfulness, self-mastery and compassion, and in the last verses they name him as the Supreme Brahman. This page follows the text published on Stotranidhi, in which the names are numbered 1 to 108. The names do not follow the order of the Ramayana story. Vaishnava devotees recite them in Rama worship and on days sacred to him.
Did You Know?
Deeds from the Ramayana
Several names recall his deeds. Verse 31 calls him the slayer of Tataka, verse 16 the vanquisher of Vali, verse 24 the destroyer of Khara, and verse 35 the one who struck down Dushana and Trishira. Verse 28 recalls the shot that pierced seven palm trees, verse 29 the cutting of Dashagriva's heads, and verse 83 the building of the bridge.
Not in story order
The names are grouped by quality and theme rather than by the sequence of the epic. Names about his early years, the forest and the war with Ravana are mixed together.
Shelter for those who come to him
Verse 15 calls him devoted to guarding those who take refuge. Verse 26 names him protector of Vibhishana and verse 95 the one who set Vibhishana on his seat. Verse 44 recalls the lifting of Ahalya's curse, verse 56 the reviving of the fallen monkeys, and verse 66 the gift of the kingdom Sugriva wished for.
A portrait of virtue
Verses 17 to 21 praise his eloquence, his truthful speech, his truthful valor and his vows. Verses 47 and 48 name him master of the senses and of anger, verse 73 the essence of compassion, and verses 75 to 77 the one with a smiling face, measured speech and the first greeting.
From Rama to the Supreme
The later names turn to the highest. Verse 32 calls him the essence of Vedanta, verse 34 the medicine for the disease of worldly life, and verse 99 the form of being, consciousness and bliss. Verses 97 to 108 move through the Supreme Self, Supreme Brahman, Supreme Light and Supreme Abode, and close with salutation to the Supreme.
