Background
This namavali is devoted to Narasimha, the man-lion form Vishnu took to protect his devotee Prahlada, a story told in the Bhagavata Purana 7.8. It is recited in daily worship, on Narasimha Jayanti and as a protective prayer. The Sanskrit closely follows the Narasimha Ashtottara-shata-namavali listed at Sanskrit Documents as no. 4, with small spelling variants; no author or Puranic source is named for it, and none is claimed here.
Did You Know?
Form of the Text
The litany has 108 names, each beginning 'Om' and ending 'namah', so every name is a short mantra offered in turn.
The Story in the Names
Stambhajaya, 'born of the pillar', Hiranyakashipu-dhvamsine, 'destroyer of Hiranyakashipu', and the last name, Prahlada-palakaya, 'protector of Prahlada', recall the Bhagavata Purana's account (7.8) of the Lord appearing at twilight, neither man nor beast.
Fierce and Tender
Ugra-simha, raudra and chanda-kopin speak of terrible wrath, while bhakta-vatsala and sharanagata-vatsala, 'tender to devotees' and 'tender to those who take refuge', show that the wrath exists to protect.
A Day in a Name
The name Vaishakha-shukla-bhutotthaya points to the bright fortnight of Vaishakha, the season in which Narasimha Jayanti is observed.
Beyond the Lion Form
Names such as parabrahman, nirguna and sat-chid-ananda-vigraha place Narasimha as the Supreme Reality, and Lakshmi-Nrisimha recalls the Lord seated with the goddess Lakshmi.
