Contesto

Tradition holds that when the young Annamacharya (1408-1503) first climbed the sacred Tirumala hills, the entire mountain range appeared to him not as inert rock, but as the divine serpent Adisesha. Overwhelmed, he sang 'Adivo Alladivo Sri Hari Vasamu' (Behold, there is the sacred dwelling of Sri Hari!). Annamacharya's sankeertanas were engraved on copper plates by his descendants and kept in a cell inside the Tirumala temple, where thousands of plates survive. This song, set in Raga Madhyamavati and Adi tala, describes Venkatachala as the highest of all peaks, filled with golden spires and conferring the supreme state of liberation (Kaivalya). The Varaha Purana and the Skanda Purana connect the Tirumala hills with Vishnu's Varaha incarnation, and the range is traditionally held to be the body of the serpent Shesha, which is why it is also called Seshachalam.

First Sight of Tirumala

Tradition relates that Annamacharya composed this spontaneously as a young pilgrim when he caught his very first glimpse of the Seven Hills of Tirupati.

Cosmic Serpent Imagery

The opening verse depicts the peaks of the hill range as the ten-thousand hoods of the cosmic serpent Adisesha (Padivela Seshula Padagalamayamu).

Treasure in the Courtyard

Annamayya describes Lord Venkateswara as the 'divine treasure hidden right in the courtyard' (Mungita Nalladivo Moolanunna Dhanamu), accessible freely to all genuine devotees.

Golden Spires

The song paints a vivid portrait of golden temple spires (Bangaru Sikharala) shimmering in the sun, where Brahma and all celestial beings perpetually assemble in worship.

Carnatic Standard

Set in Raga Madhyamavati, it is one of Annamacharya's best-loved sankeertanas and a staple of Annamayya programmes and Carnatic concerts.
