The 108 Divya Desams

Sacred Vaishnava Shrines Praised by the Alvars

The 108 Divya Desams are the supreme sacred abodes of Bhagwan Vishnu canonized in the Tamil hymns (Nalayira Divya Prabandham) of the twelve Alvar poet-saints. Spanning 105 earthly temples across India, one in Nepal (Muktinath), and two mystical spiritual realms (Paramapadam and Thiruppaarkadal), each shrine radiates deep Bhakti.

The Spiritual Heritage of the Divya Desams

In Sri Vaishnava tradition, a Divya Desam is a sacred geography sanctified by the ecstatic devotional poetry (Mangalasasanam) of the twelve Alvars, who composed the four thousand Tamil verses of the Nalayira Divya Prabandham between the 5th and 10th centuries CE.

Unlike ordinary temples, these 108 sanctums are considered direct manifestations of Bhagwan Vishnu in the Archavatara form (the accessible, worshippable icon). One hundred and five exist on Indian soil, one high in the Himalayas of Nepal (Muktinath), and the final two represent the celestial Vaikuntha (Paramapadam) and the Cosmic Ocean of Milk (Thiruppaarkadal).

Devotional Discipline & The Path of Surrender

Pilgrimage to the Divya Desams centers on the foundational philosophy of Prapatti (unconditional self-surrender to the divine):

  • •
Devotees recite verses from the Divya Prabandham in front of each Archa murthi.
  • •
Sri Ramanujacharya organized temple rituals, music, and inclusive social access across these shrines in the 11th century.
  • •
The path teaches that God descends in accessible physical form out of boundless love (Saulabhya) for humanity.

Sweet nectar of eternal fame,

Srirangam Gem, supreme and bright,

Accept my soul into Your holy service.
