The Vision of Sacred Unity

In the 8th century CE, Adi Shankaracharya undertook an extraordinary spiritual walking journey across the length and breadth of India. To weave the diverse regions, cultures, and traditions into a single tapestry of Sanatana Dharma, he consecrated four supreme pilgrimage centers corresponding to the four cardinal directions.

Traditionally, it is believed that Bhagwan takes His holy bath at Rameswaram in the South, meditates at Badrinath in the North, dines at Jagannath Puri in the East, and rests at Dwarka in the West.

  • •
Govardhana Matha (East, Puri) preserves the Rig Veda.
  • •
Sharada Peetham (West, Dwarka) preserves the Sama Veda.
  • •
Sringeri Sharada Peetham (South, Sringeri/Rameshwaram) preserves the Yajur Veda.

Four Mathas Established

Adi Shankaracharya established four monastic centers across the four corners of India, assigning each the preservation of one of the four Vedas.

Mahaprasad of Puri

The sacred food offering cooked in earthen pots at Jagannath Puri is prepared in an earthen oven where the top pot cooks first.

Consecrated by Shri Rama

Rameshwaram is the only Dham among the four dedicated to Bhagwan Shiva, consecrated by Bhagwan Rama before crossing to Lanka.

Badrinath Idol from Narada Kund

The black Saligram stone idol of Badri Vishal was retrieved from the icy depths of Narada Kund in the Alaknanda river by Adi Shankaracharya.
