Quick Devotional Guide (At a Glance)

  • •
WHAT IT IS: The supreme circular walking pilgrimage (Parikrama) across the 84-kos (approx. 250–280 km) sacred geosphere of Braj Dham, covering Mathura, Vrindavan, Govardhan, Radha Kund, Barsana, Nandgaon, Gokul, and surrounding holy forests.
  • •
WHY VISIT / CHANT: Scripturally revered in the Adi Varaha Purana and Padma Purana, circumambulating Braj Mandala liberates the soul from traversing the 84-lakh species of mortal rebirth (chaurasi lakha yoni), washing away the accumulated karmas of lifetimes and bestowing Prema Bhakti (unalloyed ecstatic love for Shri Radha-Krishna).
  • •
WHEN TO VISIT: The most auspicious window is during the sacred lunar month of Kartika (October–November) and Bhadrapada (August–September) around Janmashtami and Radhashtami. Another grand occasion is the Purushottam Maas (Adhik Maas), which occurs every three years.
  • •
WHERE: Spans the sacred Braj region across Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan (Kaman/Deeg), and Haryana (Hodal). Primary starting/transit hubs: Mathura Junction and Vrindavan.
  • •
    HOW (VIDHI & RULES):
  • •
Walk barefoot (or in simple footwear if physically infirm), chanting the Holy Names (Maha-Mantra or Radhe Radhe).
  • •
Observe strict Sattvic/Vaishnava vows: ahimsa, celibacy, truthful speech, and avoidance of onion, garlic, or intoxicants.
  • •
Perform sacred snana (ablution) in holy kunds (Manasi Ganga, Radha Kund, Shyam Kund, Kusum Sarovar) before darshan.
  • •
Maintain deep humility (Trinad api sunichena), seeking dust (Braj Raj) upon the forehead and feeding cows (Go-seva).

Sacred Origin & Puranic / Scriptural Lineage

According to the Adi Varaha Purana, when Mother Earth (Bhumi Devi) implored Bhagavan Varaha for the ultimate means of spiritual redemption for conditioned souls in the age of Kali, the Lord revealed that Braj Mandala is His eternal, transcendental abode—non-different from Goloka Vrindavana. The 84-kos perimeter represents the lotus petals of the divine heart of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, wherein every step walked in devotion yields the merit of performing an Ashvamedha Yajna.

Scriptures recount that when the gopis expressed their yearning to bathe in all the sacred tirthas of the universe, Shri Krishna did not make them travel afar; instead, He summoned all cosmic tirthas—Prayagraj, Kashi, Gaya, Pushkar, Ganga, and Yamuna—into the circumference of Braj. Thus, completing the Braj Chaurasi Kos Parikrama is celebrated as visiting every holy pilgrimage site across the cosmos simultaneously.

The cosmic pastimes of Shri Krishna's childhood, youth, protection of Govardhan Hill, slaying of demons (Putana, Trinavarta, Kesi, Bakasura), and the divine Maharaas unfolded within these sacred precincts. The dust of this sacred earth (Braj Raj) is sought even by Brahma, Shiva, and Uddhava, who prayed to take birth as blades of grass in Braj so that the dust from the feet of the Vrajavasis and Shri Radha-Krishna might fall upon their heads.

Saints, Mystics & Historical Lineage

The conscious revival of the Braj Chaurasi Kos Yatra in the medieval era was initiated by the crest-jewels of Vaishnavism:

  • •
Jagadguru Shri Vallabhacharya Mahaprabhu (Pushtimarg): Conducted the entire 84-Kos Parikrama on foot, establishing 84 Baithakjis (sacred seats of Shrimad Bhagavatam discourse) throughout the route, revitalizing the devotional memory of each lila sthali.
  • •
Chaitanya Mahaprabhu (Gaudiya Sampradaya): Arrived in Braj in 1515 CE, rediscovering lost pastime sites including Radha Kund and Shyam Kund through transcendent divine vision. His disciples, the Six Goswamis of Vrindavan (Sanatana, Rupa, Raghunatha Dasa, Raghunatha Bhatta, Jiva, and Gopala Bhatta), wrote authoritative literatures and excavated holy shrines.
  • •
Swami Haridas & Sant Surdas: Filled the groves of Nidhivan and Gaughat with the divine melody of Dhrupad and Pada-bhajans, drawing emperors and seekers into absorption with the Divine Couple.
  • •
Mirabai & Nimbarkacharya Lineage (Shri Harivyasa Devacharya): Sanctified the dust of Braj through ceaseless surrender, asserting that Braj alone is the true refuge of the soul.

Sacred Hymn & Contemplation

Recite this revered verse from the Braj Mahatmya when walking upon or contemplating the sacred soil of Braj Mandala:

सप्तद्वीपा तु या पृथ्वी सर्वा वै पुण्यलक्षणा ।

तस्याश्च मण्डलं श्रेष्ठं नाम्ना वै व्रजमण्डलम् ॥

अहो भाग्यमहो भाग्यं नन्दगोपव्रजौकसाम् ।

यन्मित्रं परमानन्दं पूर्णं ब्रह्म सनातनम् ॥

saptadvīpā tu yā pṛthvī sarvā vai puṇyalakṣaṇā ।

tasyāśca maṇḍalaṁ śreṣṭhaṁ nāmnā vai vrajamaṇḍalam ॥

aho bhāgyamaho bhāgyaṁ nandagopavrajaukasām ।

yanmitraṁ paramānandaṁ pūrṇaṁ brahma sanātanam ॥

Devotional Meaning:

"Among all the seven sacred continents of this Earth, full of virtue and holy shrines, the most supreme and elevated region is the transcendental realm known as Braj Mandala. Oh, how extraordinarily fortunate, how supremely blessed are Nanda Maharaja, the cowherd men, and all the inhabitants of Braj, whose intimate, dearest friend is none other than the Supreme Eternal Absolute Truth, the embodiment of infinite bliss!"

The Braj Yatra covers an area of about 2,500 square kilometres, with a periphery of 84 kos, or roughly 300 kilometres.

The Braj Yatra circuit was formally established in the 16th century by sadhus of the Vaishnava sampradayas, who fixed its routes, itinerary, and rituals.

The Govardhan Hill circumambulation is about 21 kilometres long and is part of the larger Braj circuit.

The Braj region extends across Uttar Pradesh into Rajasthan and Haryana.
