Sacred Origin & Puranic / Scriptural Lineage

Mount Abu, revered in ancient Jain scriptures as Arbudanchal or Arbuda Parvat, has been a sanctuary for ascetics and celestial beings since antiquity. Scriptural lore records that the first Tirthankara, Bhagwan Rishabhdev (Adinath), sanctified this mountain with his holy presence, making it a timeless Kshetra for self-realization and penance.

Between the 11th and 13th centuries, under the royal patronage of the Solanki and Vaghela dynasties of Gujarat, ministers and devotees manifested these marble temples as earthly replicas of the celestial Samavasarana (the divine preaching assembly of a Tirthankara). The principal temple, Vimal Vasahi, was built in 1031 CE by Vimal Shah, minister of King Bhima I, to atone for sins accrued during warfare. Guided by Jain Acharyas, he transformed worldly wealth into pure spiritual architecture.

In 1230 CE, the illustrious brothers Vastupala and Tejpal, prime ministers under the Vaghela rulers, consecrated Luna Vasahi in memory of their departed brother Luna. Legend states that the sculptors were rewarded with gold equal to the weight of the marble dust they carved away, yielding ceilings and domes of translucent, gossamer-like delicacy where stone ceases to be stone and becomes frozen prayer.

Sacred Hymn & Contemplation

Pilgrims standing before the radiant Tirthankaras at Dilwara chant the eternal Navkar Mantra, the supreme primordial prayer of Jainism, which pays homage not to individuals, but to spiritual virtues:

णमो अरिहंताणं । णमो सिद्धाणं । णमो आयरियाणं ।

णमो उवज्झायाणं । णमो लोए सव्वसाहूणं ।

एसोपंचणमुक्कारो, सव्वपावप्पणासणो ।

मंगलाणं च सव्वेसिं, पढमं हवइ मंगलं ॥

Ṇamō Arihantāṇaṁ | Ṇamō Siddhāṇaṁ | Ṇamō Āyariyāṇaṁ |

Ṇamō Uvajjhāyāṇaṁ | Ṇamō Lōē Savva Sāhūṇaṁ |

Ēsō Pañca Ṇamukkārō, Savva Pāvappaṇāsaṇō |

Maṅgalāṇaṁ Ca Savvēsiṁ, Paḍhamaṁ Havai Maṅgalaṁ ||

Devotional Meaning:

"I bow to the Arihantas (the enlightened destroyers of inner enemies). I bow to the Siddhas (the liberated, bodiless souls). I bow to the Acharyas (the spiritual masters). I bow to the Upadhyayas (the sacred teachers). I bow to all Sadhus (saintly ascetics) in the universe. This five-fold salutation destroys all sins and is the foremost among all auspicious blessings."

The hanging pendant in the dome of Luna Vasahi is carved so finely that the marble looks almost translucent. A circular band around it shows 72 seated Tirthankaras, and below that band are 360 small figures of Jain monks.

Tradition says the sculptors were paid in gold equal to the weight of the marble dust they scraped away, which pushed them to carve ever more delicate detail.

The large Pittalhar image of Rishabhanatha is cast from five metals, mostly brass, and is said to weigh about 108 maunds, roughly 4 metric tons.

The Derani-Jethani niches in Luna Vasahi are named for the wives of the two builder brothers. Each niche holds a Lakshmi image with Tirthankara figures.

Luna Vasahi was built in memory of Lunig, the brother of Vastupala and Tejpala, so the whole temple is an offering of remembrance.
