HOW (VIDHI & RULES): Pilgrims must maintain traditional Vedic purity: fast before Darshan, perform sacred snana (holy bath in associated Teerthas), wear unstitched traditional attire (Dhoti/Uttariyam for men, Sarees for women), offer red kumkum, bilva leaves, flowers, and coconut, and circumambulate (Pradakshina) while chanting the sacred Ashtadasha Shakti Peetha Stotram.

Sacred Origin & Puranic / Scriptural Lineage

The primordial lore of the Shakti Peethas is immortalized in the Devi Bhagavata Purana, Kalika Purana, Shiva Purana, and Mahabhagavata Upapurana. When Daksha Prajapati organized the supreme Brihaspatisava Yajna, he deliberately insulted Lord Shiva and excluded Him. Unable to bear the blasphemy against the Supreme Mahadeva, Sati—the primordial mother Jagadamba incarnate—immolated Herself in the sacrificial fire of yogic tapas (Yogagni).

Grief-stricken and consumed by supreme wrath, Lord Shiva retrieved the unburnt, sacred body of His consort and commenced the cosmic dance of destruction, the Rudra Tandava, threatening cosmic dissolution. To preserve the universe and restore Lord Shiva’s balance, Bhagavan Maha Vishnu deployed His divine Sudarshana Chakra, severing Sati’s body into sacred fragments. Wherever each divine limb, ornament, or relic touched the earth, that sacred soil transformed into a supreme vortex of cosmic energy—a Shakti Peetha—guarded eternally by Lord Shiva in the form of a specific Bhairava.

While scriptures mention 51, 64, or 108 Peethas across the subcontinental spiritual landscape, Jagadguru Adi Shankaracharya distilled the eighteen most potent cosmic seats into the revered Ashtadasha Shakti Peetha Stotram. These 18 shrines represent the complete embodiment of the Mahavidyas, Sri Vidya Upasana, and the supreme cosmic matrix of the Divine Mother.

Saints, Mystics & Historical Lineage

The supreme tradition of the Ashtadasha Shakti Peethas is intrinsically bound to Jagadguru Adi Shankaracharya (8th century CE), who consecrated the Sri Chakra Yantra at several of these holy Peethas (notably Kamakshi of Kanchi and Sharada Peeth) to soften aggressive elemental energies into benevolent, compassionate mothers (Saumya Murti). Great Tantric adepts like Matsyendranath, Gorakhnath, and Abhinavagupta practiced severe penance at Kamakhya and Sharada Peeth.

Devout monarchs throughout Indian history—the Kakatiyas, Cholas, Vijayanagara Emperors, Chalukyas, and the Maratha rulers including Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj—revered and expanded these temples with majestic stone sanctums, monolithic gopurams, and perpetual endowments for Akhanda Deepa and Nitya Annadana. Mystics like Ramakrishna Paramahamsa and Sri Ramana Maharshi recognized the unbroken spiritual currents vibrating from these eternal cosmic nodes.

Sacred Hymn & Contemplation

Devout seekers recite the opening and culminating shlokas of the Ashtadasha Shakti Peetha Stotram composed by Adi Shankaracharya to obtain the merit of visiting all eighteen shrines:

लङ्कायां शङ्करी देवी कामाक्षी काञ्चिकापुरे ।

प्रद्युम्ने शृङ्खला देवी चामुण्डी क्रौञ्चपत्तने ॥

अलम्पुरे जोगुलाम्बा श्रीशैले भ्रमराम्बिका ।

कोल्हापुरे महालक्ष्मीर्माहुर्ये एकवीरिका ॥

Laṅkāyāṃ Śaṅkarī Devī Kāmākṣī Kāñcikāpure ।

Pradyumne Śr̥ṅkhalā Devī Cāmuṇḍī Krauñcapattane ॥

Alampure Jogulāmbā Śrīśaile Bhramarāmbikā ।

Kolhāpure Mahālakṣmīrmāhurye Ekavīrikā ॥

Meaning: "In Lanka resides Devi Shankari, in Kanchipuram shines Devi Kamakshi; in Pradyumna abides Devi Shrinkhala, and in the land of Krauncha (Mysuru) reigns Chamundeshwari. In Alampur dwells Devi Jogulamba, in Srisailam dwells Mother Bhramarambika; in Kolhapur shines Mahalakshmi, and in Mahur resides Devi Ekaveerika... Salutations to the Divine Mother in all Her supreme manifestations!"

Tradition credits Adi Shankaracharya with consecrating the present Sri Chakra Yantra before Devi Kamakshi at Kanchipuram.

At Jwalamukhi in Himachal Pradesh, there is no sculpted idol; the Divine Mother has been worshipped since time immemorial as eternal, naturally burning blue flames fed by subterranean natural gases.

At Kamakhya in Assam, the sanctum sanctorum has no idol but a natural rock fissure shaped like a Yoni, nourished by a continuous subterranean natural spring.

During the annual Kiranotsav at the Kolhapur Mahalakshmi temple, the rays of the sun reach the image over several consecutive days.

Sharada Peeth in the Neelum Valley of Kashmir is remembered as an ancient center of Sanskrit learning.
