The Sacred Lore of the Shakti Peethas

According to the Shiva Purana, Devi Bhagavata Purana, and Kalika Purana, Maa Sati gave up her physical form during the royal sacrificial fire of her father Prajapati Daksha after seeing her lord Bhagwan Shiva insulted. Consumed by ascetic sorrow, Shiva carried her sacred body across the cosmos in a state of divine frenzy.

To preserve the cosmic balance and release Shiva from intense grief, Bhagwan Vishnu used his Sudarshana Chakra to divide Sati's sacred body into fifty-one parts. Wherever these sacred limbs, ornaments, and symbols descended upon the earth, a Maha Shakti Peetha manifested, guarded eternally by a manifestation of Shiva as Bhairava.
