Background

This is the Sri Saraswati Stotram, known as Agastya Krutam, a 21-verse hymn to Saraswati as goddess of speech, learning and the arts. Its own closing verses call it 'agastyamunivachakam', spoken by the sage Agastya, and the colophon reads 'iti agastyamuni prokta sri sarasvati stotram', so the attribution to Agastya comes from the hymn itself. Verses 1 to 4 are among the best-known Saraswati verses and are also recited on their own. The hymn is read by students and on Vasant Panchami, and verse 5 'sarasvati namastubhyam' is used alone as a prayer for beginning study.

Attribution

The hymn's own verse 21 calls it 'agastyamunivachakam' and the closing line says it was spoken by the sage Agastya. This is the attribution the text itself gives.

Iconography in the Hymn

Verses 1 and 2 describe Saraswati as white as the kunda flower, the moon and snow, robed in white, with veena, rosary, book and white lotus, seated on a white lotus.

Worshipped by the Trinity

Verse 1 says Brahma, Achyuta (Vishnu) and Shankara, with the other gods, always worship her.

A Hymn of Many Names

From verse 6 on, the hymn is a run of salutations such as 'shabdabrahmi', she who is the Word as Brahman, and 'mulashakti', root power.

All Goddesses in One

Verse 18 salutes her as Mahadevi, Mahakali and Mahalakshmi, showing her as the whole of the divine feminine.

The Fruit of Recitation

Verse 20 says reciting it morning and evening brings success within six months, and that those who recite or hear it have no fear of thieves or tigers.
