Aghora Murti Sahasranama Stotram
Opening of the thousand names of Aghora, a gentle form of Shiva, framed as the Goddess's request and Bhairava's reply, with mantra and nyasa.
Verses
Now the Aghoramurti Sahasranama is being written. "Om Shreem Hreem Kleem Sauh Kshmeem Ghor Ghoraya Jwala Jwala Prajwala Prajwala Aghorastraya Phat Svaha." This is the root mantra. Shri Bhairavi said: O Lord, Knower of all dharmas, Bestower of fearlessness and boons upon the universe, Supreme Lord of all, Knower of all scriptures, Transcendent and Eternal! (1)
Verse 1
You alone are the Supreme Truth; You alone are the Supreme Abode. Apart from You, I see no other essence or highest reality. (2)
Verse 2
Earlier, during the war between the gods and demons, a boon was granted to us. Therefore, O Shambhu, O Lord! Kindly grant me that boon today. (3)
Verse 3
Shri Bhairava said: O Bhairavi, my beloved! Indeed, I had granted you a boon. Whatever desire you have in your heart today, ask for it, and I shall give it to you. (4)
Verse 4
Shri Devi said: The Supreme Soul Shri Shiva, who is known by the names Bhairava and Aghora, is the Maharudra composed of the three gunas and is capable of liberating all the three worlds. (5)
Verse 5
O Ocean of Mercy! Tell me His thousand names without delay. O Mahadeva! Grant this desire of mine as the boon itself. If You are compassionate toward me, I ask for no other boon than this; please grant me this alone. (6)
Verse 6
Shri Bhairava said: Listen in a secluded spot on the peak of Mount Kailash. The boon I promised to grant during the war of the gods and demons, I grant to you; and besides this, ask for another boon as well. (7)
Verse 7
Shri Devi said: O Maheshvara! Apart from this, I ask for no other boon. O Compassionate One, worshipped by the gods, kindly tell me quickly. (8)
Verse 8
Shri Bhairava said: Pleased by your devotion, today I shall recite those supreme thousand names of the great soul Aghora, which are capable of redeeming all the three worlds. (9)
Verse 9
There is no knowledge higher than this, no praise greater than this, and no hymn superior to this, O Parvati! This is my everything. (10)
Verse 10
Composed of letters from 'A' to 'Ksha', this is an incomparable treasure house of knowledge. Filled with seed mantras, this wisdom is extremely secret and must be kept away from the ignorant who possess beast-like intellect. (11)
Verse 11
Om. For this Shri Aghoramurti Sahasranama, Shri Mahakalabhairava is the Rishi, Pankti is the meter, and Aghoramurti Paramatma is the Deity.
Om is the seed, Hreem is the power, and Kuru Kuru is the key.
Viniyoga is made in its recitation and chanting for the attainment of Aghora wisdom.
Now Karanyasa and Anganyasa: Hram, obeisance to the thumbs.
Hreem, obeisance to the index fingers. Hroom, obeisance to the middle fingers.
Hraim, obeisance to the ring fingers. Hraum, obeisance to the little fingers.
Hrah, obeisance to the palms and the backs of the hands.
Thus the Shadanganyasa starting from the heart is performed.
Additional mantras: Om, obeisance to Lord Aghora, the wielder of the trident, obeisance in the heart.
To Rudra of immortal nature, revive me, obeisance on the head.
To the blue-throated one with matted hair adorned with the moon, Vashat on the tuft of hair.
To the destroyer of Tripurasura, Hum on the armor.
To the three-eyed one, embodied as Rig, Yajur, and Sama Vedas, Vaushat on the eyes.
To Rudra, the embodiment of the three fires, blaze forth, protect me, Hum Phat Svaha to Aghorastra.
Phat to the weapon. Thus the Shadanganyasa starting from the heart and Karanyasa are completed.

Background
This text belongs to the Shaiva tantric tradition and is drawn from the Rudrayamala Tantra, according to the Sanskrit Documents edition. It centers on Bhairava as Aghora and is presented as a dialogue between Bhairavi and Bhairava. It is recited for protection, spiritual benefit and the grace of Aghora. The thousand names are preceded by a seed mantra and ritual practices, and tantric practice treats the hymn as a closely guarded secret.
Did You Know?
Aghora: The Non-Terrifying Form
Despite its fearsome sound, the name 'Aghora' literally means 'non-terrifying.' This aspect of Shiva/Bhairava is considered the most compassionate and benevolent, transcending all fear. The thousand names praise this gentle yet all-powerful deity, making it a unique devotional text.
A secret dialogue
In verses 1 to 9, Bhairavi reminds Bhairava of a boon given at the war of gods and demons and asks for the thousand names of Aghoramurti. Bhairava agrees and in verse 9 begins to reveal them for the sake of all three worlds.
Powerful Seed Syllables in the Opening
The text begins with a complex sequence of bija (seed) sounds: 'Om Shreem Hreem Kleem Sauh Kshmeem Ghora Ghoraya... Aghorastraya Phat Svaha.' Each syllable is believed to invoke specific energies. The entire thousand names are said to be composed of such seed mantras, starting from the letter 'A' and ending with 'Ksha', covering the entire Sanskrit alphabet.
Detailed Ritual Instructions (Nyasa)
The text includes a full nyasa (ritual imposition) where specific mantras are mentally placed on different parts of the body, like the fingers, heart, head, and eyes, to sanctify the practitioner. This shows that the stotra is meant to be chanted with precise ritual gestures and meditations for full effect.
Supreme among stotras
In verse 10 Lord Bhairava declares that there is no higher knowledge, no greater hymn and no better stotra than this one, and calls it his very all. Verse 11 asks that it be guarded as a secret from those who are not ready.
