Background
This stotra belongs to the Shakta tradition, which venerates the Divine Feminine as the supreme reality. The Sanskrit Documents text lists it as Stotrarnava 08-01 and names no author. Verse 3 refers to Jambunatha, which places it with the goddess Akhilandeshvari of Jambukeshwaram. It is recited as a daily prayer or on Fridays, a day associated with Goddess worship. The verses weave in seed syllables such as Om, Hrim and Klim, which are believed to hold the Goddess's creative energy.
Did You Know?
Structure and bija mantras
The first four verses begin with the seed syllables Om (verse 1), Hrim (verse 2), Shri (verse 3) and Klim (verse 4), and call the Goddess the one who dwells in the 'ocean' of that sound. Bija mantras are central to tantric worship, each standing for a particular divine energy.
Epithets of the Goddess
The stotra piles up dozens of names and attributes for the goddess, including Tripureśvarī (Mistress of the Three Cities), Rājarājeśvarī (Queen of Queens), Kāmākṣī (She whose eyes are desire), and Śyāmāṅgī (She of dark complexion). Each epithet highlights a different facet of her power, beauty, or cosmic role.
Refrain of devotion
Each of the first eight verses ends with the same line: "dāso'haṃ tava pādapadmayugalaṃ vande'khilāṇḍeśvari", meaning "I, your servant, bow to the pair of your lotus feet, O Mistress of all universes." This refrain unifies the hymn and shows the devotee's humble surrender.
Phalashruti (fruit of recitation)
Verse 10 promises that those who recite this ten-verse hymn on Friday (bhṛgor dine) after meditating on the Goddess gain wealth, long life, health and offspring. This is a typical fruit verse that encourages regular practice.
Colophon and title
The text closes with "iti śrī akhilāṇḍeśvarī stotraṃ sampūrṇam", meaning "Thus ends the hymn to the Mistress of all universes." The name Akhilāṇḍeśvarī joins akhila (all), aṇḍa (egg or universe) and īśvarī (mistress), so she rules the whole cosmic egg.
