Background

These 36 verses are the Ashtakshara Mahatmya, the glory of the eight-syllable mantra, and form chapter 17 of the Narasimha Purana. The chapter opens with Shuka asking his father Vyasa what a devotee of Vishnu should recite to be freed from the sorrow of worldly life. Vyasa answers with the mantra Om Namo Narayanaya. The chapter first tells how to chant it: with Vishnu in the heart-lotus, in a quiet place, before an image of Vishnu or by the water. It names the seer, the metre and the deity of the mantra, and gives a colour for each syllable. It then lists the fruits of repeating it lakh by lakh, from purification of the self to liberation, and ends with Vyasa's solemn declaration, with arms raised, that there is no mantra beyond these eight syllables. The Sanskrit Documents file cites a Gita Press edition of the Narasimha Purana. Verse 15 recommends reciting the mantra a hundred times on every dvadashi, the twelfth day of the lunar fortnight.

Did You Know?

Shuka's question and Vyasa's answer

Verse 1 is the question of Shuka, and verse 2 is Vyasa's reply that he will tell the best of all mantras, which frees a mortal from the bond of birth and worldly life. The father teaches the son, which gives the chapter its warm, personal tone.

Seer, metre and deity

Verse 5 names the seer of the mantra as Narayana himself, the metre as divine Gayatri, and the deity as Paramatma, the Supreme Self. Verse 8 adds that the mantra is made perfect by the Pranava, Om.

A colour for each syllable

Verses 6 and 7 give each of the eight syllables a colour, to be held in meditation. Om is white, na is red, mo is black, na is red again, ra is the colour of saffron, ya is yellow, na is dark like collyrium, and the last ya is many-coloured.

The fruits of the lakhs

Verses 18 to 22 count the recitations in lakhs. One lakh purifies the self, two give mastery of the mantra, three lead to heaven, four to the nearness of Hari, five to pure knowledge, six to a steady mind in Vishnu, seven to one's own true nature and eight to nirvana.

Vyasa with raised arms

In verses 30 to 33, Vyasa raises his arms and declares three times that there is no mantra beyond the eight syllables, no scripture beyond the Veda and no god beyond Keshava. After weighing all the shastras, he says, the one conclusion is to meditate always on Narayana. Verse 36 promises that those who read this hymn at the three sandhyas cross the ocean of worldly life without fear.
