Background
This hymn is the gods' praise of the Goddess in Chapter 5 of the Devi Mahatmya, which is part of the Markandeya Purana and traditionally credited to Vyasa. Its verses run from 5.9, 'namo devyai mahadevyai', to 5.80 in the Sanskrit Documents text, and the long 'ya devi sarvabhuteshu' refrain begins at 5.14. In the story the gods, driven from their realm by the demons Shumbha and Nishumbha, go to the Himalaya and praise Vishnumaya. It is recited on Navaratri and is often chanted as a separate hymn.

Source
The hymn is Devi Mahatmya 5.9-5.80, from Chapter 5 of the Markandeya Purana's Devi Mahatmya, also called the Durga Saptashati. It is recited on Navaratri.
Structure
Verses 5.9 to 5.13 salute the Goddess under many names, among them Mahadevi, Shiva, Prakriti, Gauri and Durga. From 5.14 on, twenty-one stanzas repeat the refrain 'ya devi sarvabhuteshu', and each takes three verse numbers.
The 'Ya Devi' Refrain
The words 'ya devi sarvabhuteshu' mean 'the Goddess who dwells in all beings'. She is named as Vishnumaya, consciousness, intellect, sleep, hunger, shadow, power, thirst, patience, birth, modesty, peace, faith, beauty, prosperity, livelihood, memory, compassion, contentment, mother and delusion.
Inclusivity of Opposites
Verse 5.13 calls her 'atisaumya-atiraudra', extremely gentle and extremely fierce, and the list places sleep and hunger beside peace and compassion, the Goddess seen in every state of life.
The Triple Salutation
Each stanza ends 'namastasyai namastasyai namastasyai namo namah', a threefold bow that completes the three verse numbers it occupies.
Cosmic Role
Verse 5.77 calls her the presiding power of the senses and elements in all beings, and 5.78-80 says she pervades this whole world as consciousness, 'chiti'.
