Background
Jaap Sahib is part of the daily prayers (Nitnem) in Sikhism, traditionally recited in the morning by Sikhs after bathing. It is found in the Dasam Granth, the second holy scripture of the Sikhs, and is attributed to Guru Gobind Singh Ji (1666–1708), the tenth Sikh Guru. The composition uses various poetic meters (chhands) to create a rhythmic, meditative flow, and its verses emphasize the transcendence and omnipresence of God, often referred to as Akal (the Timeless) or Waheguru (the Wonderful Lord). It is recited as an act of devotion and remembrance, helping the practitioner focus on the Divine beyond all worldly distinctions.

Author and place
Jaap Sahib is attributed to Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Sikh Guru. It opens the Dasam Granth, occupying its first pages, and is one of the morning prayers of the Sikh Nitnem. It is also recited at the Amrit Sanchar, the initiation ceremony of the Khalsa.
Verses and meters
The hymn has 199 numbered verses. They are set in ten classical meters (chhands): Chhapai, Bhujang Prayat, Chachari, Charpat, Rual, Madhubhar, Bhagavati, Rasaval, Haribolmana and Ek Achhari. Each change of meter changes the rhythm of the recitation.
Languages
The text draws on Sanskrit, Braj Bhasha, Arabic and Persian. In the Bhagavati section that includes verses 150 to 160, names such as Karim (Beneficent), Rahim (Merciful), Ghanim and Gharib-nivaz (cherisher of the poor) are used for the Creator. The hymn thus praises one God in the vocabulary of many traditions.
Praise by negation
It opens in the Chhapai meter by saying the Creator has no mark, symbol, colour, caste or lineage, and that no one can describe the Creator's form, outline or dress. The same method continues through the hymn in the many words that begin with the letter “a”, such as Akal, Alekh, Abhekh and Ajoon, which mean timeless, unrecorded, unclothed and unborn.
Salutations
Many verses begin with “Namo” or “Namastvam”, meaning “salutations to you”, and follow it with a name or quality of the Divine. Reciting them one after another gathers the mind in a steady rhythm of devotion.
The Ek Achhari verses
Verses 189 and 190 are written in the Ek Achhari (one-syllable) meter, where each line is a single word, such as Ajai, Alai, Abhai and Abai (invincible, without support, fearless). The hymn ends in the Bhujang Prayat meter, with a final salutation to the Lord who is the abode of all.
