Background

This is the Bojjhaṅga Sutta group (the Gilāna Suttas), a set of discourses from the Saṃyutta Nikāya, one of the oldest collections of the Buddha's teachings in the Pali Canon (SN 46.14-16). Across three occasions, the seven factors of awakening (bojjhaṅgā) are recited to someone gravely ill — the elder Mahākassapa, another ailing elder, and finally the Buddha himself, who asks the Venerable Mahācunda to recite the factors back to him — and in each case the illness subsides upon hearing the teaching. It is traditionally chanted as a protective and healing discourse (paritta), and remains part of the wider Theravada Buddhist tradition.

About this Text

Did You Know?

Three recitations in one sutta-set

These Gilāna Suttas record three separate occasions where the seven factors of awakening were recited to someone gravely ill — the elder Mahākassapa, another ailing elder, and finally the Buddha himself — and in each case the illness subsided upon hearing the teaching.

The Seven Factors of Awakening (satta bojjhaṅgā)

The list is mindfulness, investigation of phenomena, energy, joy, tranquility, concentration, and equanimity. In the Pali tradition these are considered the direct antidote to the hindrances of the mind, and are often recited or contemplated as a healing practice.

Even the Awakened One falls ill

In the final episode it is the Buddha himself who is gravely ill — not Mahākassapa or another monk. Rather than teaching, he asks the Venerable Mahācunda, “Cunda, let the factors of awakening occur to you,” and recovers upon hearing his own teaching recited back to him.

The Buddha's bedside manner

In the first two episodes the Buddha personally visits the sick monks, asks after their health, and then teaches the bojjhaṅgā. The text says the patient 'rose from that ailment' immediately after hearing the teaching — the discourse itself is framed as a healing ritual.

Cunda recites back to the Buddha

In the final episode the roles reverse — the Buddha, too ill to teach, asks the Venerable Mahācunda to recite the seven factors to him instead. This shows the teaching's power did not depend on the Buddha being the speaker — hearing it was enough, even for the Teacher himself.

A formula repeated for healing

The structure of the sutta is highly repetitive — each factor is named with the same phrase, and the same exchange of 'Are you bearing up?' / 'I am not' / 'These seven factors...' is repeated for each patient. This repetition is characteristic of early Buddhist oral literature, where such formulas aided memorization and recitation.
